Dominique Ansel Bakery (Los Angeles)

Dominique Ansel and his cronuts and cookie shots have arrived in Los Angeles at the Grove. Earlier this year I read about Dominique Ansel opening up shop at the Grove, but I had no idea it was already opening this soon and I just happened upon the restaurant by accident. I only stopped in at the bakery, but there is also a restaurant located upstairs called 189 by Dominique Ansel, which offers a bar menu during lunch on the weekends, and a full dinner menu the rest of the week.

The best time to visit the bakery would be when it opens in the morning, 9am, until right before lunch. Visiting in the early afternoon, even on a weekday, involved a line that extended out the door and limited pastry options. The line was not a major deterrent but for most bakery items they only make a limited batch each day until they run out. Specifically for the cronut, they were limiting how many each person could buy in order to accommodate the crowd.

The bakery menu includes crowd favorites, some very unique desserts, and a savory selection such as salads and sandwiches. The cronut may not be worth over an hour wait, but I did not mind my twenty minute wait for the fluffy dessert. I also loved the ham and cheese croissant, which was a favorite among the staff.

The dessert scene is getting crowded at the Grove as the Dominique Ansel Bakery opened right next door to a Sprinkles and a Laduree.

The bakery is surprisingly spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. Some bakeries are pretty limited on space, which make them seem extra crowded and usually force customers to eat straight out of their hands when there is not a table available.

I just had to take a photo of this dessert and description (I have never heard of gooseberries or elderflower jam).

The hardest part is deciding what to order. They even offer a set of cookie shots to go, which I think would be so fun at parties.

If you are interested in grabbing dinner, 189 is located upstairs.
